Artist Insight #8 - Lyon Tide

Yay! Artist Insight #8, this series has been going so well so far with our latest featuring Lyon Tide. This indie-pop band is a dynamic trio from Birmingham, UK. This band is just getting started this year with releasing their Debut single 'Closure', the track with a strong mix of different tones and synth's see them producing a perfect debut single with signs of more good things to come.

'Closure' shows strong lyrical emotion with putting real-life situations into words as seen in this track. 'Letting you go was so much harder than I could ever imagine' is a prime example of what to expect from this trio.

With the release of this track, we were so pleased to ask them a few questions about their journey as a band and what they have planned coming for this year.

Congrats on the debut single 'Closure', what's the message? The story behind it?

First of all, thanks, it’s been a while coming but we got there in the end. As a track, it’s simply about relationships, how breaking up and coming out of one is never easy for anyone, especially if it was long term. You always need a reasoning, an answer to the ‘why?’ in the back of your minds before you can accept that it’s over and finally move on. If you take a look at the lyrics from the track, we feel it touches a lot of common nerves and illustrates a lot of relatable feelings during these situations. Having said that, we also decided to make this particular track our debut release on the 1st of January as a kind of metaphorical break up with the awful relationship we all had with 2020 and now that we had stepped into 2021, it was time to get Closure.

How did you form Lyon Tide, when did you start to take making music seriously as a group?

We never really formed as a group in the sense of us making a conscious decision to become a band, it just kind of happened naturally. The three of us all went to the same Art College, Anthony had just been kicked out of a band and as the songwriter, came armed with a handful of lyrics and looking for someone to pick up co-writing with again. Darren was messing around with synth instrumentals as well as sing and play the guitar really well. So, when Anthony asked Darren to add his lyrics to his instrumentals, the whole thing kicked off. Girish is like a one-man band by himself and was playing bass guitar for a metal rock band at the time so we asked him to help with bass lines and drums during the recording process. Things got serious about a couple of years ago when we realised we loved ‘working’ together, had over 30 tracks on our hands and felt it was a shame to just keep them as digital files on a hard drive. Hence, we made a plan and decided to go for it.

Is this debut a sign for much more to come? An album maybe?"

Oh, yeah! Like we said, we have over 30 tracks ready to go and “Closure" is the first of many — if the reception to our music is welcoming, of course. We aim to release a second single mid-February, a third in April and our debut album, “Beginnings Of Ends” will be released shortly after that. We’ll let you figure out the meaning of the album title on your own ;)

What is the end goal? Where would you want to reach to be able to say you've made it?"

We would love to have at least one of our songs used in a TV show or movie soundtrack, that for us would be the ultimate goal, right now. Even a TV commercial would be extremely cool. We’re not looking for fame or riches, just a little bit of recognition and appreciation of our music. We have a friend who has six platinum discs to his name and he still feels like he hasn’t made it yet — we'd be happy with one, who knows what will happen. Our focus, for now, is to try and get our music out there so that people know we exist. Once that is established, we can say, “OK, now we can get started."

"What type of music inspires you guys as a band, where does the influence for your sound come from?"

Oh, there are so so many. First of all, all three of us are into various types of music, Darren is heavily into 80s synth and electronic music while also a massive fan of John Lennon and The Beatles. Anthony likes more indie pop/rock material like Snow Patrol, Keane, Kodaline as well as lesser-known bands like Trash Can Sinatras and Origin. Girish is into rock metal all the way. We feel that these obscure variants in taste all blend together in our music and is what creates our sound. In fact, we like to describe our sound as "Snow Patrol meets Massive Attack after a divorce from Erasure."

They have such a kickstart to their musical journey and it is no surprise they have received such positivity already. Definitely more to come from them, so keep an eye out for Lyon Tide.
